Luther's Tool Grinders 1920 Trade Catalog

Image
Luther's Tool Grinders, Trade Catalog No. 31  One of my very favorite trade catalog covers and one of my favorite tool makers: Luther Dimo-Grit Grinders, Catalogue No. 31, Luther Grinder Manufacturing Company, Milwaukee, Wisconsin The cover is pure Art Deco, early Machine Age advertising art. It doesn't get any better than this one. I've owned a number of Luther grinders, including the Best Maide top of the line. All are beasts. Many have machined helical gears, precision machined ways and tight oil fittings. I started with one of those German hand grinders that Woodcraft used to sell, then switched to Luther. Admittedly, in general I prefer older tools. The pdf is housed in my Google Drive account as a free download. You can also find this pdf at the Internet Archive. Same pdf, different sites. Your choice. Luther Tool Grinders Trade Catalog 1920

Let's Talk Frame Saws

Image
Let's talk frame saws. Common enough in Europe, uncommon in the United States, the frame saw is typically seen as a simple wooden frame for holding a blade that looks as if it was chopped from a bandsaw blade. Frame saws are incredibly useful tools. Capable of ripping, crosscutting, cutting on a curve and more depending on the blade and frame configuration. Fellow saws and turning saws are but two of the less common variations. Herewith three pages from the Peugeot Freres 1938 catalog, formerly of my collection. You can find the entire catalog along with a trade marks list and an Archive trade catalog. You can find the full catalog and more in this blog post .

Ship Builders Schooner Hull Cabinet Card c1880

Image
Ship Builders Schooner Hull Cabinet Card c1880  From my blog archives November 13, 2007 This particular image is a Cabinet Card that holds more than it appears to. On the surface, it's a rare image of a ship under construction. On close examination, things get fuzzy. First off, there are two small triangular black areas at the bottom left and right hand corners. These tell me that this is an Albumen photograph (a photograph made with egg white, no bacon please) of a Tintype photograph (no tin, just a sheet of iron with a collodion coating... go figure). It was not uncommon for photographers to make copies of earlier images either for resale or by request. The Tintype would have been a full-plate, a rarity in and of itself. Most Tintypes that we see are actually sections of the full plate. Cost was a factor as well as the work involved in producing the larger image. Most full-plate or half-plate Tintypes are outdoor scenes. Back to this image. While found in New England, identifying...

Rag Rug Weaving Family c1890 Cabinet Card - Looms - Weavers

Image
Rag Rug Weaving Family - c1890 Cabinet Card Photograph This set of two cabinet cards is unlike any I've ever seen. Period photos of weavers are unusual but are found. This set features a home based rag rug weaving family. Rag rugs consist of scrap or discarded cloth, sliced in narrow strips, loaded on a special shuttle and woven to create a sturdy and long wearing rug. Rag rugs were popular during the later part of the 19th century as affordable floor coverings. The set consists of a photo of the workroom and of the family. In the workroom can be seen four large and heavily built hand looms, a sewing machine and the entire family. A gas lamp hangs overhead. The shape of the workroom, the lamp and the wall paper leads me to identify this as a room in a home, likely the living room. The family photo is a typical posed cabinet card photo of a proud family. No doubt these were shot by a traveling photographer, taken on site and developed in the photographers traveling wagon.

Frame-Up! The Story Of The People And Shipyards of Essex, Massachusetts By Dana Story Frame-Up! The Story Of The People And Shipyards of Essex, Massachusetts.   Ten Pound Island Book Company, Dana Storey 1986. ISBN: 0938459007 "How unfortunate it is that we must so often wait until something is gone before appreciating it or even being aware of it. Generations of Essex people were born, lived and died amid the sounds of the shipyards: the caulking mallets, the sound of the axe and adze ringing against white oak, the millions of hammer blows, and the shouts of the men. At the time it was a part of their existence, like the air they breathed. Now that it is all gone we realize what a satisfying chorus it was and how silent the town is now." p.26 That paragraph explains why I value this book, re-reading it every few years. Dana Story was a son of Essex, of the Story family of shipwrights. His words include first and second person accounts as well as those stories told by the peo...

Ambrotype of a Carpenter and Tool Cabinet - Wooden Planes - Chisels - Hand Saws -Bits -Braces

Image
Ambrotype:  Carpenter and his tool cabinet One of my favorite old photographs. An ambrotype of a carpenter and his tool cabinet. The tools look like a house framer's set. While I call this a tool cabinet, it might well be a portable tool cabinet for worksite travel. Underneath the ambrotype was a piece of paper upon which was penciled: "Oh, brother! When shall I see you again." Whether this note refers to a brother who has left on a trip west or to one who has passed, we'll never know. For more on ambrotypes, visit Ambrotype Wiki.

Bell of Ottawa, Illinois and published by Howard Challen of Philadelphia in 1858. It remained in continuous publication through 1904, evidence of the book's importance to the architectural and building trades of the period. Carpentry Made Easy  was the first American architectural trade book to popularize the transition from heavy timber frame to light balloon frame construction. Although not the first book to introduce balloon frame construction, Bell's text was the first American technical book to thoroughly describe the method in such a way as to allow the skilled practical carpenter to readily apply this affordable building method. Included were the various major framing methods of the period for everything from s...
