A Bit About The Ford BIt Company

Image
The Ford Bit Company 19th Century Trade Catalog Typography Why trade catalog typography? Because I have a penchant for trade catalogs and even more for typography, Trade catalogs are nearly extinct now thanks to the world wide web. During the second half of the 19th century, the commercial printing business of designing trade catalogs was a speciality unto itself. This was mass marketing at it's finest. Trade catalogs had to grab the attention of both the wholesale and retail customers. What better way to do this than with eye catching typographic designs? Hardware and Tool Manufacturer Trade Catalogs If you hadn't already guessed, I have a thing for what I shall term, because I can, "Occupational Trade Catalogs". Herewith we begin with The Ford Bit Company, makers of patented Auger Bits of Holyoke, Massachusetts, circa 1896. Take a gander at the exuberance of this minimalist design: Now that you have reveled in the brief but rewarding visual experience of the Ford Bi...

Baldwin Plane Company Grooving Planes

Image
Baldwin Grooving Planes Wall Art Adapted from the original Baldwin Plane Manufacturer Trade Catalog in my personal collection. The 1858 Baldwin Plane trade catalog has an interesting history. I purchased it as part of an ephemera lot from a South Carolina dealer. Everything in the lot was heavily soot and smoke stained, water stained and stinky. From what I could learn of the lot, it came from the attic of a defunct retail hardware store in Charleston, SC. Unfortunately, by the time I learned of the auction lot, the rest of the attic contents had been sold. The catalog paper is very fragile. Dry, stained, wrinkled and difficult to conserve. I guess I put in around 30 hours of work on the pages just to get them to the point at which I could image them. The history of the Baldwin Plane Manufactory   This page is entitled "Grooving Planes". Unlike modern wood plane nomenclature, Baldwin named any plane capable of making grooves, a grooving plane. The following planes listed on ...

 B. B. Chapman, Manager - The Webber Co. Lumber Yard and Carpenters Shop, Ohio Cabinet Card c1910 One of my favorite early 20th century Occupational Cabinet Cards. The Webber Co. Carpenter Shop - Managed by B. B. Chapman, Lumber Yard, Carpenters, Jobbers, Store Fronts and Fixtures. c1910 but anyone who knows about antique autos will know more than I do. My first job in carpentry was as at a Waltham, MA commercial fixture shop. The shop manager spoke English and all the rest, Greek. It was interesting. c1860 Wood Turner, Cat and Dog Lathe

Image
Pattern Maker, Wood Turner, Custom Built Dog and Cat Lathe, c1860 A truly one of a kind 19th century cabinet card. Photographed c1860 somewhere in the United States. This one is as idiosyncratic as it gets. The canvas backdrop indicates a traveling photographer. The turner's hair and garments alwo indicate U.S. Civil War period. Now to the good stuff. The lathe looks to be a manufactured leather belt driven pattern makers lathe. Very heavy bed frame. This thing must have weighed a ton. What stands out are the head and tail stocks. Look carefully at the photo! I have no doubt these parts were made by the turner as patterns, then cast in the foundry connected to the commercial shop. The Head Stock is a Dog. The Tail Stock is a Cat, notably the adjustment wheel is, shall we say, the Tail, exiting through the cat's rectum. If only I knew if this lathe still exists, somewhere in a collection of museum. To date I haven't found it. Buy a high quality reproduction from PrintsAntiq...

An essential reference for anyone interested in 19th century classical and traditional building trades. Before digging into the period book review of The Mechanic's Companion, a few thoughts of my current thoughts on Mr. Nicholson's Opus. There is a modern misinterpretation of The Mechanic's Companion (as has been the same for Joseph Moxon's Mechanick Exercises). Modern reviewers and yes, even mo...
