Have you ever seen a Salt Saw? These were hand saws used in the selling of salt blocks, a commodity commonly found at earlier Grocers and General Stores. Made of a hard brass and shaped like a regular hand saw, the Salt Saw would not corrode on contact with salt. Large blocks of salt, as with sugar, were stocked for sale by weight to the consumer. As with ice, the block had to be cut to meet the request of the buyer.
